Message from young people for young people – what is COVID-19?

Message from young people for young people – what is COVID-19?

Peer Power, in collaboration with NHS England and NHS Improvement have been working on a series of co-produced peer-messages for children and young people who are currently in the secure estate in England and Wales.

This is the first in the series that explains – in an empathetic and caring way – basic information about COVID-19, what it is and how to stay safe.

“We are a group of young people who’ve also been where you are and understand how you’re feeling. We hope this five minute message will give you some facts and provide you with a bit of clarity and comfort during this time” Ria Perez, Peer Power Youth Engagement Worker

Peer Power Experts fed into the script, written by NHS England and Improvement’s Professor Keith Willett and recorded the audio for the video. The message is delivered by young people, for young people.

The Peer Power Experts are proud to have contributed and hope that the message informs and goes some way to reassuring young people; letting them know that their peers in the community care about them.

“I’ve been to the secure estate so I understand what it’s like not really knowing what’s going on around you.. I hope this information helps you guys a lot.” Peer Power Expert

Thanks to NHS England and NHS Improvement for funding this piece of work and to our Peer Power Experts for their valuable contributions. We hope this will be a helpful resource for those working with young people in youth justice, and the youth sector more broadly. Two versions of the messages are available below, one with reference to the secure estate, and an audio clip where this reference has been removed. Please do share with young people or other professionals who may find it useful.

We are delighted that the video has been shared via the Global Health Network.

Talking about his motivations for contributing to the video, one of our Peer Power Experts said:

“I wanted to do this because I care about young people and want to inform them with vital news about COVID and in this hard time for all of us to fight through together”

This is the first in a series of messages that are designed to help children and young people in the current times. Watch this space for more!
